Translation Turnaround Time
Q: What is your turnaround time for large (and not so large) translation projects?
It depends. What matters most is the language pair but the volume, word count and complexity of the source language documents can all impact the turnaround time.
For example, the translation of general business texts will never take as long as the description of the uranium enrichment process.
Also, German-French and German-English translation projects will probably finish earlier than, let's say, English-Macedonian translation jobs. Simply because we have more German-English translators than Macedonian.
An experienced and qualified professional translator can translate about 2-3.000 words in a day on average. If you take the word count in your document and divide it by this number you can determine the deadline.
But if we have a large technical translation project on which 5-20 translators and 2-3 editors can work simultaneously, the turnaround time is drastically reduced because instead of 2-3.000 words a day, we can translate 15.000-40.000 words in 24 hours.
Proofreading and editing can slow the turnaround time by 10-20%.
As you see, turnaround time is different with every project but there are some general rules of thumb you can count on.
